ICA Fund has announced the successful exit of its investment in Onigilly, a Japanese comfort food chain specialized in serving onigiri. The company will continue its next phase of growth through a strategic partnership with a major restaurant group, which will support Onigilly’s national expansion and its mission of promoting healthier eating habits. Onigilly was founded by Koji Kanematsu, who began selling onigiri at Bay Area farmers markets before opening the company’s first brick-and-mortar location in San Francisco’s Financial District. ICA invested in the company in 2018, becoming Onigilly’s first institutional investor, and during that time Onigilly refined its store and supply chain model, navigated pandemic-era disruptions, and built a franchising platform to fuel its next stage of growth.
